What makes a teacher great?

A great teacher does more than teach—they heal, guide, and believe in you when you can’t believe in yourself.

From seventh to twelfth grade, I was lucky to have two such teachers—a husband and wife—who changed my life. Before I met them, I was lost, overwhelmed by life’s stresses, and had even stopped speaking for a long time. I was confused, withdrawn, and felt broken. But they saw something in me I couldn’t see myself.

With patience and kindness, they helped me through my darkest moments. They listened when no one else did, nurtured my thoughts, and slowly helped me find my voice again. Their care went beyond the classroom—they became a part of my family and gave me a sense of belonging I had never felt before.

That’s what makes a teacher great. It’s not just their knowledge or teaching methods—it’s the way they make you feel seen, valued, and capable. They shape more than minds; they shape lives. And long after school ends, their lessons live on—in the way we speak, think, and become who we are…
