History Behind the Kaveri Engine
The Kaveri engine is an Indian jet engine project initiated by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Launched in 1986, it aimed to power the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, reducing India’s reliance on foreign technology—yes, the dream of an Indian-made jet engine was born decades ago.
The first core ran in 1995, with prototype testing starting in 1996. Flight tests were planned for 1999, and the engine was expected to power the Tejas by 2000.
But reality, unlike brochure timelines, had other plans. The Indian jet engine development program faced delays due to technical challenges—thrust-to-weight issues, metallurgy limitations, and, of course, some classic geopolitical interruptions. The post-1998 nuclear sanctions further slowed down the jet engine development in India.
Still, by 2010, the engine had completed 1,880+ hours of testing, including successful trials on a Russian Il-76 aircraft. Not bad for a “failed” engine, eh?

Recent Developments
Though it didn’t power the Tejas, the Kaveri engine was repurposed. It’s now being integrated into India’s stealth unmanned combat aircraft, the Ghatak UCAV, and has undergone high-altitude testing, including in Russia.

Future Promises of the Indian Jet Engine
Efforts like Kaveri Engine Derivative (KDE) and Kaveri 2.0 aim to produce engines with over 90 kN thrust—enough to power next-gen jets like the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). These engines may also see deployment in potential naval platforms.
The program is aligned with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision and could contribute to defense exports, if nurtured. The phrase “better late than never” comes to mind—especially when it carries a 90 kN punch.
